BACKGROUND
HISTORY: Chongyun's Genshin Wiki page
PERSONALITY:What impression does your character give when meeting someone for the first time? How does the first impression differ from your character’s true nature?
When first meeting him, Chongyun appears as a calm, stoic, and composed individual, who has a rather serious disposition and a polite manner of speaking. Many of the citizens of Liyue have described him as having "a heart of clear water, and a face of ice" in regards to his serious and disciplined nature. Hailing from a clan of exorcists that are highly respected in Liyue, Chongyun takes great pride in his heritage, and he follows a strict training regiment that he executes daily to hone his skills and continue their legacy. Much of this is not necessarily because of any pushing or demands from his family, but rather his own sense of personal pride and admiration for his clan and all they have accomplished. However, around his friends and those he is comfortable with, more facets of Chongyun's personality come into light. He tends to lack awareness in social settings and can be quite awkward at times, and his extensive training regiment often means he has little time for casual activities, even admitting that he doesn't know what normal people do for fun. It is often thanks to his friends dragging him out that he even experiences casual, fun events; otherwise he'd probably just spend all his time hunting evil spirits and training. Though knowledgeable in spiritual arts and occult matters and surprisingly perceptive at times, Chongyun also has a naive, oblivious streak, and can easily be tricked or deceived by others just by being promised the chance of encountering an evil spirit. He is also incredibly loyal to those who prove to be a true friend, and will regard them quite highly and go out of his way to repay their friendship and kindness in turn. What are your character’s ambitions/goals? Why are they important to your character?
Chongyun’s greatest goal is to become an excellent and well-respected exorcist worthy of upholding his clan’s legacy. As mentioned before, Chongyun’s heritage is a point of great pride for him, and growing up listening to the tales and stories of his family has inspired a deep-seated urge to follow in their footsteps and uphold the honour of exorcists. His great respect for his family’s legacy and skills is actually why he dislikes the ease and convenience that his Pure-Yang Spirit provides him; while it is a great boon, Chongyun sees it as a cheat of sorts, and a hindrance in preventing him from using his family’s skills against evil spirits. But his desire to both see and exorcise spirits without the use of his Pure-Yang Spirit is what propels him forward in his journeys, and it is so strong that it is what earned him his Vision in the first place; his ambition to be the best exorcist by his own merits and training, rather than on purely relying on the power of his Pure-Yang Spirit, was strong enough to warrant the notice of the gods and the granting of his Cryo Vision. What are your character’s fears? How do they hinder or challenge your character?
While not necessarily a fear, a point of concern for Chongyun is not being able to use his exorcism training properly to get rid of evil spirits. His Pure-Yang Spirit is something of a sore spot for Chongyun, and for a long time he viewed it as a cheat and affront to the techniques and skills that he learned from his clan’s teachings. Being as honourable and proud as he is, Chongyun doesn’t like the notion of just being able to sit in a room and do nothing in order to banish an evil spirit; in his opinion, it’s no different than a charlatan’s trick. Often he doesn’t accept payment or will turn down bonuses if the task is simple enough, insisting that he shouldn’t accept payment if he “didn’t do anything”. Initially, Chongyun went to great lengths to try and suppress his Pure-Yang Spirit in order to be able to see and combat the spirits he’s commissioned to exorcise, but that result yielded few results. It was actually thanks to his friend Xingqiu that he changed his tactics, since Xingqiu had once said "If you can't reduce the effects of your yang energy, what if you sought out an evil spirit that is immune to it?” With this thought in mind, Chongyun has decided to now use his yang energy as a test, seeking out demons who could withstand its effects rather than trying to suppress it. That would be a true challenge of whether or not his exorcism skills are worthy of his family’s legacy.
Although, if we count legitimate fears, Chongyun does have a mild wariness of spices and Jueyun Chilis, though that’s usually due to his friend Xingqiu pulling pranks and slipping spices into his food to trigger his Pure-Yang Spirit.
INVENTORY:
- His Cryo Vision; a friendship tassel given to him by Xingqiu is attached to it
- His Sword, Skyrider Greatsword
- Exorcism Tools - A small, personal collection of various exorcism tools; some slips of paper and ink for seals, a whittling tool for carving talismans, and some salts and incenses for cleansing
- A few yang-suppressing popsicles - special popsicles crafted especially for Chongyun, using ingredients that naturally help suppress his Pure-Yang Spirit
POWERS
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
❄️ Pure-Yang Spirit - Also known as congenial positivity and a condition so rare that it only appears once every thousand generations or so, Chongyun is excessively overabundant with positive energy, moreso than any average human being would possess. Since most evil spirits are composed of negative yin energy, Chongyun’s Pure-Yang Spirit actually works as a natural deterrent for spirits, and he is able to frighten away even the most stubborn of evil spirits away with his mere presence alone. Despite this incredible natural ability, it also means that Chongyun cannot get close to malignant spirits without them being driven away first. This is actually very distressing for Chongyun since he is unable to get close enough to a spirit to exorcise it or even see it, which makes him sometimes doubt if his actions can truly be called exorcism if he doesn’t actively exorcise a spirit using his clan’s techniques. His Pure-Yang Spirit also comes with some notable drawbacks, listed in the Weaknesses section of this app.
❄️ Cryo Vision - Said to be gifts bestowed upon mortals by the gods of Teyvat as recognition for one's ambition, Visions allow the wielder to wield one of the seven elements of the world. It is said that “When a person’s ambition reaches a certain strength, the gods look upon them with favour. In other words, a person’s Vision represents their ambition”. Chongyun’s Cryo Vision allows him the power over ice, and allows him to channel ice into his attacks. Some examples of him using his Vision in combat are his attacks Spirit Blade: Chonghua’s Layered Frost and Spirit Blade: Cloud-Parting Star. He can also apparently use his Vision to make things like this.
❄️ Exorcism Training - Chongyun has trained extensively to master his clan’s exorcism arts, learning thaumaturgy and martial arts from his family. His thaumaturgy skills include being able to conjure special glowing seals, crafting protective talismans, being able to sense residual auras and traces of evil spirits, and other such techniques. His martial arts abilities come in the form of his swordsmanship, and he trains daily to be able to fight off enemies who are not susceptible to his thaumaturgy abilities. His rigorous daily training also means Chongyun is a very strong and skilled swordsman, capable of lifting and swinging heavy claymores with ease, be it slashing before him, spinning in a circle, or bringing it crashing down from overhead.
NERFING: In line with the other Genshins in game, Chongyun's Vision will be inert upon entry (though he won't have any negative hits to his personality the same way losing one's Vision would normally cause). He will still be able to use his exorcism techniques and martial arts training, but most of them will be limited to his physical ability. He can still create his talismans and sense spiritual energy, but he won't be able to use higher-powered techniques. Also, his Pure-Yang Spirit won't be as effective at banishing evil spirits, but it will still cause the weaknesses listed below.
WEAKNESSES: Chongyun's Pure-Yang Spirit is a rare and unique gift, but it is not without its drawbacks that affect his day to day life. His overabundance of positive energy means he is incredibly susceptible to increases in his body temperature and emotional impulses and urges, and if left unchecked can result in hot-bloodedness and explosive emotional outbursts. To alleviate this, Chongyun abstains from any sort of "heated" activity: not drinking or eating hot or spicy foods, wearing light clothes, not getting into arguments and keeping himself from being angered, meditating to control his emotions, keeping away from rousing music, staying indoors on sweltering days, and always bringing a parasol when on the job. If Chongyun consumes something hot or spicy (whether unknowingly or as a result of a prank from his friend Xingqiu) or his Pure-Yang Spirit gets triggered in some way, he either falls unconscious or blacks out and succumbs to his emotions and impulses, and his personality undergoes a complete 180 as he becomes loud, boisterous, uninhibited and impulsive. Some examples of actions done during his "Pure-Yang" state include: yelling "everything’s on me tonight!" in a crowded restaurant despite having no money on him, chatting up perfect strangers to brag about his clan’s abilities while sampling all their food, claiming to sense an evil spirit before slapping a charm on his friend Xiangling’s forehead and chasing her around, and jumping on a table and dancing while waving his claymore in hand. Each of these instances Chongyun has no memory of, but he often feels deep embarrassment for getting to this point. Fortunately, most people seem to take Chongyun’s congenial positivity in stride, and consider him to be a very boisterous "life of the party" kind of person during these instances. Xiangling actually believes that this crazy, wild side of Chongyun is actually the "true" Chongyun, since he acts with no personal walls up barring his emotions.
